The first F2 Cuora zhoui to hatch in captivity

Updated: Jan 29, 2020

Cuora zhoui, potentially the rarest Cuora species on earth with only a handful of founder specimens surviving today, is one of our most urgent projects. Not only do we continue to search for its natural habitat in the wild, we also maintain a significant assurance colony in our Center. In 2017 we finally succeeded in hatching an F2 specimen. F2 simply means the offspring were produced from parents that also hatched in captivity. This is the first such success in the world, and soon after, was happily repeated by the IZS in the Allwetter Zoo Münster.
